Island Park is one of the region's best-known snowmobiling areas, with more than 500 miles of groomed trails that connect with hundreds more around West Yellowstone (Idaho Parks & Recreation). Reliable snowfall and varied terrain range from easy touring routes to challenging high-elevation powder. The old Union Pacific railroad bed becomes a groomed trail every winter, and the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway is groomed too.

Rentals and guided tours are available in Island Park and West Yellowstone, and beginners are welcome.

Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing

Harriman State Park grooms trails along the Henry's Fork for cross-country skiing, with moose and trumpeter swans for company. Snowshoes open up the quiet forests almost anywhere.

Downhill skiing

For a downhill day, Grand Targhee Resort in Wyoming's Teton Mountains is a full-service resort famous for deep snow.

Yellowstone in winter

Most of Yellowstone's roads close to cars in winter. From mid-December to mid-March, the West Entrance road is open only to guided snowmobile and snowcoach trips, a quiet, unforgettable way to see steaming geyser basins and bison in the snow. Between early November and mid-December, and again in spring, the roads are closed to all travel while they are prepared. Check the NPS road status for this season's dates.

Planning and preparation

Dress in proper winter layers, allow extra travel time, watch the forecast, and carry safety supplies. If you head into the backcountry, check the avalanche forecast, carry the right gear and know how to use it, and always tell someone where you are going. See Weather & Road Conditions.
