The Henry's Fork of the Snake River

Image
Bill's Island

One of the most famous trout rivers in the United States, known for clear water, gentle stretches and exceptional dry fly fishing. Below Island Park Dam, the fast water of Box Canyon holds big rainbows; downstream, the slow, famous "Ranch" water at Harriman State Park rewards careful presentations during the summer hatches. Upstream, the river near Mack's Inn and Coffee Pot Rapids is easier water and popular for floating too.

Henry's Lake and Island Park Reservoir

Henry's Lake is world-famous for its trophy trout and peaceful mountain setting. Its season runs from the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend through January 1.

Island Park Reservoir offers boating, still-water fishing and wide views. Idaho Fish and Game stocks rainbow trout, and fishing is best from a boat.

Licenses and guides

You need an Idaho fishing license to fish in Island Park; buy one online from Idaho Fish and Game or at local stores. Fishing inside Yellowstone needs a separate park permit. Guided trips and self-guided exploring are both common here, and local fly shops know what is hatching this week.

Fishing questions

Can you fish in Yellowstone National Park?

What is the Henry's Fork River?
The Henry's Fork of the Snake River is one of the most legendary wild trout fisheries in North America. It flows directly through Island Park and is world-famous for its large, selective rainbow trout.
Do I need a fishing license to fish in Island Park?
Yes. An Idaho fishing license is required for all anglers 14 and older. Licenses can be purchased online at idfg.idaho.gov or at local outfitter shops in Island Park.
Why is the Henry's Fork considered one of the best fly fishing rivers in the world?
The Henry's Fork is renowned for its large, wild rainbow trout in exceptionally clear spring-fed water. The hatches are complex and the fish are selective — it is considered one of the most technical and rewarding dry fly fisheries anywhere.
What sections of the Henry's Fork are best for fly fishing?
The Box Canyon is famous for large rainbows in fast pocket water. The Last Chance reach — also called the Railroad Ranch section through Harriman State Park — is legendary for its demanding dry fly fishing over rising trout.
When is the best time of year to fly fish the Henry's Fork?
Late June through early July for the famous Green Drake hatch is the pinnacle. September and October offer cooler temperatures, lighter crowds, and excellent fall fishing. Early season (May) can be productive but water levels vary.
Do I need a guide to fly fish the Henry's Fork?
You do not need a guide, but first-time visitors benefit enormously from one. The hatches and fish behavior are complex. A half-day guide trip pays for itself in fish caught and knowledge gained.
Where can I hire a fishing guide in Island Park?
Several licensed outfitters operate out of Island Park. Ask our reservations team for current local guide recommendations when you book — we work with the best guides in the area.
What kind of fish can I catch near Island Park?

Many Island Park properties are located on or near the Henry's Fork or its tributaries. Some cabins have private river frontage. Check individual cabin listings for water access — it is a significant amenity worth filtering for.
