What to realistically expect
- Rapid weather changes are normal. Cool mornings, warm afternoons, sudden showers or thunderstorms, colder air higher up and wind in the open valleys, all in one day. Forecasts help but are not always precise in the mountains.
- Cold mornings, even in summer. Layers are the most reliable strategy all year.
- Road delays from wildlife crossings, construction, wet or slick pavement, and frost or snow outside the peak of summer. Travel times often run longer than the map says.
- Spring and fall bring mixed conditions: occasional snow or ice, low visibility and soft shoulders. Winter is far more demanding.
Winter driving
Snow tires and four-wheel drive are recommended in eastern Idaho in winter. Roads can change quickly, and even busy highways sometimes close for blizzards or high winds. Check 511 before you set out, and carry emergency gear: a shovel, water, snacks and blankets.
Backcountry safety
If you ski, snowmobile or hike into the backcountry, take survival gear and avalanche equipment, check the avalanche forecast from the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center, and do not rely on a phone or GPS alone. Most of all, tell someone where you are going and when you will be back.
