Johnny Sack, a German cabinetmaker, leased a small piece of land at Big Springs from the Forest Service in 1929 and built this cabin between 1932 and 1935. He kept adding to it over the years for the many friends who visited.
What makes his work unique is the bark. He prepared the wood so the bark stayed on, and used it as texture and color on the window trim, wall panels, lamps, chairs, desks and beds he made himself. Johnny was only 4 feet 11 inches tall, and his basement workshop was built to his size.
After his death in 1957 the cabin was due to be removed, but local people worked to save it. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and a short paved path leads to it from the Big Springs campground.
